music ............ Combat Collins (Shaun Lee Collins) started his journey with music from an early age, being brought up on various styles and sounds of music from 80’s pop, Bob Marley, Elvis, Phil Collins, Simply Red, Blues and Jazz. My ambition of being a mic man came apparent soon after staying up late week after week listening to late night House and breaks music which mc’s hosted on from the airwaves of Liverpool. After leaving Liverpool and moving south bound, soon started picking up on the old hardcore scene and jungle vibes, this and a brother constantly blasting out hip hop tracks soon led to me writing and practising rhymes and riddles. With so many good mc’s with big skills kept me frustrated as I could not grasp the different techniques early on and wasted a lot of time writing shit in a desperate attempt to impress myself! I soon started to meet people with the same plans and ideas, I met Tom Plank (Planky) who went on to set up KillaBeatz Recordingz. I got myself a job at the local club working behind the bar (Enzo’s) at 17 years of age (don’t ask !) here I got myself into a great position to meet and mingle with some of the big names in the game and to watch and learn what went on. I kept on the back of the Manager/ Promoter to give me a ten minute go here and there until he eventually got pissed off and gave me my chance. He liked it, and gave me more chances and started putting my name on the flyers (Verbal at the time ) he then gave me first residency at 18 yrs, I was back stage again listening and watching what went on. The club was booking the likes Dj Rap, Micky Finn, Goldie, Ratpack, The Freestylers, Lisa Lashes, Bryan Gee, Kenny Ken, Bad Company, Darrison, GQ, Feerless, Dynamite, Chickaboo, Full Cycle and so on. Enzo’s was rated as a big underground club within the area which welcomed a lot of people from near and far. Here I learnt my trade spending nearly all of my time for the best part of three years. I soon started picking up other local gigs and got involved in the garage scene, working with a few others we started to get a nice following together. We made a track called Taxi for Anne, which was made in Red spot records studio (Timmy Magic) and had numerous plays on the Dream Teams shows on radio 1, but fizzled out into nothing. Started to spend a lot more time in make shift studios, developing ideas and sounds, gathered and introduced various practicing artists from the local area are got them working together to try and create more options for all involved. I then spent a couple of years pacing up and down my kitchen practising, with the idea that if my style was good enough as soon as I got back on the circuit I would start making tracks. After sitting and researching the local scenes and all artists and gangs involved and started to work out who was who and the connections between them all, best I could. I have since started to contact and meet as many promoters, mc’s dj’s etc as possible and have started to clock up the miles showing my face at as many places as I can. I am working on regular gigs for the near future in Bournmouth, Bristol, Oxford, Bath, Salisbury, Swindon and surrounding areas. And putting my vocals down for as many Good producers as possible in an effort to spread my voice, in all kinds of scenes. I talk and rhyme with a dry sense of humour and take things as deep as I can I am intrigued with the mystical and spiritual factors of life but still very in touch with the most simple things. Times are tough, : ) But as they say, 'drama brings inspiration!'
